Repotting Your Bonsai Tree

Repotting Guide: Dwarf Jade & Fukien Tea Bonsai

Repotting is a crucial aspect of bonsai care, ensuring that your miniature trees remain healthy. At Bonsai & Brew Studio, we believe that understanding the repotting process is essential for both novice and experienced bonsai enthusiasts alike! Let's walk through the steps for repotting Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) and Fukien Tea (Carmona retusa) bonsai, highlighting the unique needs of each species.

When to Repot Your Bonsai

Repotting frequency depends on the age and growth rate of your bonsai. Younger trees generally require repotting every 1-2 years, while older trees may only need it every 3-5 years. Look for signs like roots circling the pot, soil compaction, or reduced growth as indicators that it’s time to repot.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Sharp scissors or pruning shears
  • Root rake or chopstick
  • Bonsai pot (with drainage holes)
  • Fresh bonsai soil mix appropriate for the species
  • Mesh for drainage holes
  • Watering can or spray bottle

Repotting Dwarf Jade Bonsai

  1. Preparation: Water the bonsai a day before repotting to keep the roots moist and easier to work with.
  2. Remove the Tree: Gently remove the Dwarf Jade from its pot, being careful not to damage the roots.
  3. Root Pruning: Use scissors to trim away about one-third of the root mass. Focus on removing dead or excessively long roots.
  4. Soil Replacement: Place a mesh over the drainage holes of the new pot. Add a layer of fresh bonsai soil.
  5. Replanting: Position the tree in the pot, spreading the roots evenly. Fill in with soil, making sure to eliminate air pockets by gently pressing down.
  6. Watering: Water the tree thoroughly to help settle the soil.

Repotting Fukien Tea Bonsai

  1. Preparation: Water the Fukien Tea a day before repotting.
  2. Remove the Tree: Carefully remove the Fukien Tea from its pot.
  3. Root Pruning: Trim about 1/3 of the root mass, removing unhealthy or overly long roots.
  4. Soil Replacement: Place a mesh over the drainage holes and add a layer of fresh soil.
  5. Replanting: Position the tree in the new pot, ensuring the roots are spread out evenly. Add soil around the roots and press gently to remove air pockets.
  6. Watering: Water thoroughly to help settle the soil.

Post-Repotting Care

After repotting, place your bonsai in a shaded area to recover. Avoid direct sunlight for the first few weeks and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Monitor for any signs of stress, such as yellowing leaves or wilting, and adjust care as needed.

That's a Wrap!
