Bonsai Temp & Humidity

Optimal Temperature & Humidity: Dwarf Jade & Fukien Tea Bonsai

At Bonsai & Brew Studio, we believe that a well-cared-for bonsai can bring immense joy and tranquility to any space. Two popular bonsai species, the Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) and the Fukien Tea (Carmona retusa), require specific temperature and humidity conditions to thrive. In this blog, we will explore these needs in detail to help you create the perfect environment for your bonsai.

Creating the Optimal Environment

To ensure your Dwarf Jade and Fukien Tea bonsai flourish, here are some additional tips:

  • Monitor Temperature: Use a thermometer to regularly check the temperature around your bonsai. Avoid placing them near drafty windows, heating vents, or AC units.
  • Manage Humidity: Invest in a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels. Use humidity trays or mist your bonsai regularly to maintain the required moisture levels.
  • Air Circulation: Ensure your bonsai are placed in a location with good air circulation to prevent stagnant air and reduce the risk of pests and diseases.

Temperature Needs:

Dwarf Jade bonsai prefer a warm environment. Ideally, they should be kept at temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) during the day. While they can tolerate slightly higher temperatures, it's essential to avoid exposing them to temperatures above 85°F (29°C) for extended periods. During the night, a slight drop in temperature to around 55°F to 60°F (13°C to 16°C) is beneficial.

Humidity Needs:

Dwarf Jade bonsai are succulents, which means they can thrive in lower humidity levels compared to other bonsai species. A humidity level of 40% to 50% is adequate for these plants. However, during particularly dry periods or in air-conditioned environments, a humidity tray or regular misting can help maintain the necessary moisture levels.

Temperature Needs:

Fukien Tea bonsai are native to tropical regions and prefer warmer temperatures. The ideal range for these plants is between 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) during the day. They are sensitive to cold and should be kept above 50°F (10°C) at all times. Sudden temperature drops can cause stress and potential leaf drop.

Humidity Needs:

Fukien Tea bonsai require higher humidity levels to thrive, ideally between 50% to 70%. In dry indoor environments, using a humidity tray, room humidifier, or regular misting can help achieve these levels. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant also helps prevent fungal issues that can arise in high humidity conditions.

That's a Wrap!

By understanding and meeting the specific temperature and humidity needs of your Dwarf Jade and Fukien Tea bonsai, you can enjoy healthy, vibrant plants!
